The puppy we weren’t planning for

The puppy we weren’t planning for

The photograph that changed our minds.

We weren’t Henry’s first intended family.

Someone else had originally said they would have him, but then changed their mind. A friend’s son breeds Labradors for field trials, and we already knew that my friend would be bringing home one of the puppies from the litter.

When the puppies were born, we talked about having one too. In the end, we decided the time wasn’t right for us. Sensible decision made—or so we thought.

Then we heard that one of the puppies was unexpectedly available.

We had only seen one photograph of him, but somehow we both just knew. It was that little face—the photograph of him sitting on his own—that we fell in love with.

Less than twenty-four hours later, we were on our way to collect him.

On the way home—less than twenty-four hours later.

On the journey home, he curled up in my arms and slept against me. The puppy we hadn’t planned for was coming home with us.

Sometimes the things you haven’t planned turn out to be exactly what you needed. Henry may not have been the puppy we were expecting, but it didn’t take long for him to become completely ours.
